Just as older people need specialized medical care, so do older birds and exotic pets. At the Veterinary Center, we are aware of the unique needs of our older patients.

During examinations of older birds, ferrets, rabbits, rodents (guinea pigs, chinchillas, rats, mice, hamsters, gerbils degus), reptiles (lizards, turtles, tortoises, snakes), sugar gliders, hedgehogs, amphibians (frogs and toads), or other exotic pets, our veterinarians and staff perform a complete physical examination of these patients and suggest blood and stool tests and sometimes x-rays to evaluate these pets for illnesses more commonly seen in older patients.

If an older pet should need surgery, we gear pre-surgical testing towards helping ensure that surgery and anesthesia are as safe as possible in these older animals. Our veterinarians provide exotic pet owners with detailed financial estimates for all medical and surgical procedures that the owner must approve before any procedure is undertaken.

Also, if these geriatric pets require grooming, we are attentive to any conditions, such as arthritis, that might impact the way we trim nails in any older exotic pet or wings in older birds. When older exotic pets board with us, we are sure to arrange their cages just as they are at home, so that they are as comfortable as possible during their stay.

At the Veterinary Center, we treat all geriatric exotic pets gently and with the extra care they often require.
